Our people in the news: Jim Bromlow was pictured on the front page of the Hays Daily News on February 24 being entertained by a two year old drummer at Cedar View Assisted Living in Hays. The Music Sparks group led by JoAnn Jordan came to Cedar View for an inter-generational program.

In Sunday, March 1, Hays Daily there was an article about the Regional Science and Engineering Fair at FHSU. Kate Rues and Abbey Oborny, LaCrosse Middle School seventh graders created a joint project about “security using macro impressions to detect suspicious activity”. They were pictured with Jennifer Jester, a scientist at KSU Agricultural Research Center.

Allen Shaw has notified us that the meteorite Matthew Rooney recovered from south and west of Brownell, Ness County, has been officially accepted by the Institute of Geophysical and Planetary Physics, University of California, at Los Angeles on February 23, 2015. It is called Bazine Creek. It was found on the boundary of a field on April 15, 2014. A sample and data provided by UCLA has been placed at the Ness County Historical Society.

I visited with Kathy Lovitt Hurd last week asking how she liked the change of weather from San Diego to Minneapolis, Jeff, Audra and Austin really like it, Kathy not so much! She told me that Eric has a job. He is a grad assistant in football operations at Oklahoma State. Congrats Eric!!

Jerry Sipes, a Kansas City part-time transplant in the Timken area is pictured in Farm Leader letter published by Farm Bureau. He is giving a donation from Wyandotte County FB to stop Fowl Play in Kansas. The Ness County FB board of directors committed $500 to the fight.

Galen Oelkers, Atlanta, was a Friday – Monday guest of his mother Jean Oelkers.

Chuck Higgins and Shirley Higgins motored to Hutchinson Friday afternoon to watch Hutch High girls play basketball against 7th seeded 5A Salina Central. It was also senior night. The Hutch girls won 44-42 and will play at home Thursday night against Garden City. The girls breathed a sigh of relief as they didn’t want to ride six hours on a bus to Garden! Jenna Higgins is a senior playing for Hutchinson.

Mary Beth Peach was one of the organizers of Extension Basketball this year, those playing with McCracken ties are: Zoe and Rylan Anderson; Caden Morgan, Chet and Audrey Irvin; Kendrick Herdman, Colby Stull, Will Rues, Triston Nelson, Bryce Conner, Elizabeth and Ella Showalter, McKaylee Day, Taylor Doornbos, Brenden Peach, Allie Seltman, Hayden Bracken.

After all the weather alerts and advisories, McCracken received about 1&Mac218;2 inch of snow.....

Good Luck to the LaCrosse Leopards who play Pratt Skyline at Pratt Skyline on Friday. Zach Peach is a member of the team. (Thanks to Mary Beth who gave me these items, makes a difference in our news).

News Flash!! Mark your calendars for October 24th!!! It is the date for McCracken’s Fall Fest. Don’t forget the St. Patrick celebration in Rush Center, March 14th.

How fun is it to watch Wichita State Shockers!!! Really enjoy. Since Ron Baker was formerly from Utica and has relatives in McCracken, we ‘sorta/kinda’ claim him as one of our own.

Congratulations to Hoisington wrestling coach Dan Schmidt, named KWCA wrestling coach of the year for classes 3-2-1A.

I found this newspaper article (without a date) about the Class B basketball Tourneys.......There are 501 Class B clubs competing in 62 districts. Winners and runners-up, along with four invited teams, will go on to regional tournament competition March 6-10. The regional field will include 128 clubs. Class B regions will be at Beloit, Colby, Deerfield, Eudora, Eureka, Garnett, Great Bend, Haven, Hays, Hiawatha, Junction City, Marysville, Osage City, Pittsburg, Pratt and Winfield. District championships in our area are held at Ransom: Wednesday, McCracken vs. Arnold; Brownell vs. Utica; Thursday, Ransom vs. Healy, Brownell vs. Utica. (I don’t understand why Brownell vs. Utica is listed twice but that is what is written).

Carolyn Stremel received a ll rating for dramatic interpretation and Lorrie Morgan a l and gold medal for dramatic interpretation at the State Speech and Drama Festival in Hutchinson.

Those receiving l ratings in the music festival held at LaCrosse; 7th & 8th grade clarinet trio; Sally Buster, piano; Brenda West alto-sax; Kirk Wells, trumpet. Others participating were Cheryl Davis, Linda Sloan, Debra Webs, Pamela Showalter, Dave Derr, Randy Taylor and Nancy Higgins.

Three students received honorable mention in the Class A State Scholarship Contest; John Irvin, Craig Wendler & Myron Schuckman.

MHS track team members are Kent Bible, Craig Wendler, Jerry Schutte, Chuck Halbleib, Danny McFarren, Greg Guster, Mark Derr, Keith Higgins, Mike Legleiter and Coach Dudley Fryman. Student body election was held at MHS with John Brack, president; Craig Wendler, vicd-president for 1970-1971 school years.

Donna Rogers and Floyd Norlin have received scholarships at Barton County. Donna’s is for academics, Floyd’s for music.

The Cookie League baseball team is 3-0 in the league. Lonnie Irvin pitched his second shutout of the season last week. Cookie members are Jerry Higgins, Fritz Foster, Greg Hinman, Don Casey, Darwin Grumbein, Steve Swartz, Lonnie Irvin, John Elmore, Jerald Grumbein and Gary Schuckman.

MHS Class of 1950 held their reunion during the weekend with a dinner at LaCrosse Country Club and potluck supper in the Legion hall in McCracken. Members of the class attending: Tony Schlitter, Wayne Irvin, Dixie McMullen, Wendell Hinman, Julius Unrein, Velma Legleiter and Patricia Derr. Dr. Wm. Spomer was absent as he is with the Peace Corps, Peru.
