We were asked about the origin of the Easter Bunny. He is also known as the Easter Rabbit or Easter Hare. He is a folkloric figure and symbol of Easter. It originated among German Lutherans. In legend, the creature carries colored eggs in his basket, candy and sometimes toys to the homes of children. The custom was first mentioned in a book “About Easter Eggs' in 1682. In Germany they used eggs boiled with some flowers to change their color. In the Eastern Orthodox Church to this day they typically dye their Easter eggs red as a reminder of the blood of the sacrificed Christ. Some use the color green in honor of the new foliage emerging after the long-dead time of winter. The Ukrainian art of decorating eggs for Easter dates to ancient, pre-Christian times. The idea of an egg-giving hare in the U. S. came in the 18th century to the Pennsylvania Dutch. Only good children got colored eggs in nests they made in their caps and bonnets.

CKVC (Central Kansas Volleyball Club) took 2nd place this past weekend at the WSF Tournament Series in Wichita Kansas. The tournament was held at the Wichita Sports Forum, a 148,000 sq ft facility. It was pretty impressive. Members of the team are Morgan West, Olivia Baus, Taylor Regan, Erica Gilbert, Jacee Richardson, Lacey Mitchell, Addie Kershner, and Emma Rues.

The Mendenhall family get together held yesterday was actually the Mendenhall Thanksgiving/ Christmas they usually have the Saturday after Thanksgiving. The ice storm that weekend last year ‘ruined it’ so rescheduled it for Spring. 50+ family members were there. Jeanette and three of her sisters, kids, grandkids, and great grandkids, nieces and friends of the kids.

Alicia Rues gave the McCracken Museum a ceramic lipstick holder made in 1972. She received it from Drewie McGaughey

History notes: July 20 1888

Last Saturday afternoon the people began to gather in large number at the baseball grounds to witness a game of ball between Hampton and Bazine. The Bazine club was strengthened by substituting Kinney and Meek, of Ness City and led out by making eight scores the first two innings, while the Hampton boys were content with nothing. At this juncture the Bazine sympathizers made themselves conspicuous by the yells and derisive shouts. Here matters took a turn and in the next three innings Hampton made fourteen scores, Bazine making only one. The good luck kept up until the finish, Hampton making eight scores in the eighth inning, winning the game by a score of 15 to 25. The Hampton boys are doing some fine playing. Wm. Lovitt knocked the ball so far that the Bazine men could not find it. Joe Wharton, Ike Metz and Thompson all distinguished themselves at the bat. Tussey pitches a good game and succeeded in fanning Bazine right along. Al Start was equal to the occasion and did excellent work behind the bat. Hampton won the stakes, $40, besides many side bets of $5 each.1975 History: John Irvin was elected treasurer of Delta Tau Alpha, National Agricultural Honor Society at Ft. Hays.
