Marilyn Sommers of Silver Lake arrived Tuesday to visit parents Francis and Roberta Wierman. On Thursday they drove to Rita Brethowr's in Park City & celebrated Roberta's birthday. Friday they drove to Anthony Comm. Care Center to visit Alverna Humburg and arrived back home Friday night.

Ruth Crawshaw has returned home from the hospital.

Jayme Hansen scrapped ice and snow from her car windshield on the front page of the Hays Daily News on Thursday. She is the grand-daughter of Donna (Rogers) and Lee Hansen of Hays.

Guests of Julia Zeller and Bill Zeller on Saturday afternoon were Mr. and Mrs. Gary Ruehlen, Kay and Karen Ruehlen, children of the late Kathleen Ruehlen all of Bartlesville, Oklahoma.

Mark your calendars for mass at St. Mary's Catholic Church on Saturday, May 25 at 7:30 p.m. This is Memorial Weekend. Father Klein will officiate.

Alana Rogers is visiting her daughter, Malena, in Wichita. It was nice to see Mamie Rogers in Ness

Why is an outdoor bazaar called a flea market?

The first flea market was in Paris. Originally a flea market had to be outdoors and the goods secondhand. It was assumed that old merchandise would attract fleas as well as customers.

Why is a pedestrian violation called Jaywalking?

Blue jays were abundant along the eastern seaboard when the colonists came, but as it became populated the jay moved to the countryside. A jay became synonymous with “hick” in the eighteenth century. So if a rural dweller came to the big city, they crossed wherever they wished, so Jaywalikng meant “hick-walking”

Don and Lynnette Doornbos and family enjoyed spending time with her brothers for the weekend. They all traveled to Goodland for a cousins wedding, Megan Stefan on Saturday. Bill & Kelly Harp from Great Falls, MT and Mike, Jen, Dylan, & Maddie Harp from Cedar Rapids, IA

Congratulations to Bet and Jeanette McCormick who celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary and Bet's 80th birthday April 20th. They enjoyed supper with Marsha Harrison, Jeanette's daughter, in Ness City at the Derrick Inn on Friday. Saturday Bet received a birthday call from his granddaughter, Megan Townsend from South Africa.

Did you all witness the ring around the moon Saturday night? It was humongous and there weren't stars inside the ring. We have never seen a ring this large, awesome.

The sloppy joe/nacho supper sponsored by the Relay for Life Friday night was a success. Especially enjoyable was the Bingo after the meal. Lots of laughs and giggles.

I stopped by Gary and Susan Rebel's home Friday afternoon, Susan answered the door assisted by her walker. Unbelievable after her surgery on both knees.

Our sympathy to the family of Ardyth Anderson Johnson who died Saturday. She was a sister to Ben Anderson. Hopefully we will receive an obituary soon.

Neil Diamond flew from Los Angeles to Fenway Park in Boston Saturday afternoon and surprised the fans. He sang “Sweet Caroline” a song he wrote in a hotel in Memphis in 1969. The song was addressed to Caroline Kennedy and the Boston Red Sox have adopted it as their theme song.

Rob McGaughey celebrated his 56th birthday with guests Ashley McGaughey, Roy Jensen, Jacey Archer, Lauren, Caelyn, Clayton Sewell, Helena & Austin McGaughey, Carly Derr and her boy friend Carlos. They enjoyed a steak dinner and Ashley provided a homemade decorated birthday cake.

Congratulations to Derek Derr who received his GED diploma this week. Austin missed the math test and will retake it May 1.

We understand the United Methodist Church had an awesome potluck dinner this past Sunday.

On May 1st, the Mustang Relay for Life team will have a May Day Potato supper at the community building starting at 6 pm. They will be serving baked potatoes with favorite toppings and a cake walk.

Carol Weber and Shirley Higgins attended the Encore series Monday evening. They listened to a shattering trio Time for Three that transcends traditional classification, with elements for classical, country western, gypsy and jazz idioms forming a blend all its own.

The American Legion is having a hamburger feed at the American Legion Saturday, April 27th. The McCracken Mustangs relay for life will serve desserts and also have a bake sale. Please plan to attend.

Monday: Carol Bible, Roy Conrad, Gerald Crotinger, Jodene Dawson, Verna Dixon, Larry Eisenhour, Mary Ann Graf, Bobby Higgins, Marjean Jones, Hazel Pfaff, Reva Rodeman, Patricia Ryan, Eddie Schuckman and Patricia Thompson.

Robert House is serving with the 29th Signal Construction battalion at Croix-Chapeau, France.

Fred Sultzer, Jack Edwards and Bill Darkes were in Dodge City Tuesday of last week.

Sam Oller, Big Bow has been named new manager of the Farmers' Cooperative elevator succeeding Millard Deward. Sam and his family have rented the Joe Warta home.

194 county graduates will receive diplomas as the school year ends.

Rev. Woodrow Hill is the new minister at the Assembly of God Church.

Lester Higgins is stationed with the Navy in Los Angeles.

McCracken population for 1952 was 500.

Joan Ryan and Donald L. Buster were married May 17 in the Methodist Church, McCracken.

A son, DeWayne, was born to Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Foos May 26.

A son was born to Mr. and Mrs. Dean McFarren May 27.

Jack P. Wilson, Vic Higgins, Sylvester McCormick, Ray Ohlemeier & Edmund Casey have been called for their pre-induction physical examinations at Kansas City.

Roselyn Moran celebrated her 7th birthday with a birthday dinner.

Al Rues & Arlene Ingraham were married May 23 in St. Mary's Church in McCracken. They are making their home in the Steinshouer apartment.

John Kober and Dotty Ann Hallett were married at Thursday afternoon McCracken.
