Doubleheader is a steal from railroad jargon of the late nineteenth century. A doubleheader to them was a train with two engines.

Why do we say that someone who is taking careful aim is drawing a bead on?

The bead is the little knob at the end of the gun barrel used for sighting. The bead on guns with two sights is always the one closer to the muzzle.

Why are people from the backwoods called hillbillies?

It is an American expression first recorded in 1904 to describe rustic hill dwellers. The billy had long meant fellow, so hillbilly really meant “hill fellow”

A four man scramble was held on Saturday, May 25, at McCracken Golf Course.   The first flight winners were Butch Harp, Tony Harp, Ty Elias and Johnny Showalter;  2nd flight winners were Mike Stull, Bryan Yohe, Scott Littler, Tayler Stull; 3rd flight winners, Scott Foos, Chad Oberhelm, Smokey Fairbanks, Troy Clouston.  Those participating were Pat Salsbury, Kenny Foster, Bruce Davis, Les Diehl, Mike Stull, Bryan Yohe, Scott Littler, Tayler Stull; Dale Whittom, Alan Hill, Martin Higgins, Richard Showalter; Scott Foos, Chad Overhelm, Smokey Fairbanks, Troy Clouston; Matt Peach, Tyson Pivonka, Derreck Depperschmidt, Tanner Yohe, Butch Harp, Tony Harp, Ty Elias, Johnny Showalter, Dylan Hamilton, Gene Erb, Matt Kraft, Larry Kraft.  Seven teams participated and 25 ate lunch.  The Longest Putt was Kenneth Foster, Longest Drive, Butch Harp and Closest to the Pin Bryan Yohe.
 
Congratulations to Kent and Judy Bible, Albuquerque, on the birth of a granddaughter, Sloan, born in September.   Sloan is June Bible Bell’s great-granddaughter.
 
The following people made it possible for St. Mary’s Church to have Mass for Memorial weekend:  Jean Schutte and Twila Higgins for setting up before mass; Twila Higgins for making the new Tabernacle Veil and arranging the flowers; Shirley Higgins and Jean Schutte, gifts; Bet McCormick and Paul Pavlu, ushers; Marge Elias, Rosary leader; Pam Pavlu, lector; Carolyn Thompson and Phyllis Conrad, extraordinary Ministers; Roy Conrad, server; Susan Keith and Michele Moran, music leaders.  We especially are appreciative to Father Pascal Klein for officiating the mass.
 
West Burch American Legion Post 59, McCracken, Kansas, conducted the services at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery on Memorial Day and at McCracken City Cemetery.  Those in the honor guard were William Storie, Kenneth Foster, Richard Showalter and Bob Fear;  Firing Squad members were Bob Funk, Dennis, Elias, Tony Harp, Arlyn  North, JakeTomlinson, Diz Washaliski, Martin Higgins and Babe Gilbert.  Jan North and Kerri Derr recited Flanders Field and Answer to Flanders Field.  Arlene Gilbert led the Catholic Choir and the City Choir at the cemeteries.  William Storie sounded taps.
 
Shannon Keith represented Ellsworth at the State Track Meet in Wichita on Saturday in the discus.  She was 9th with a throw of 103’3”.  Her  team mate Trevor Miley won first in  the boys Shot put with a throw of 54’11”.   He also placed 4th in discus and 11th in Javelin. 
 
The Memorial Day swimming pool fundraising dinner was well-received.  There were many generous contributions to the ADA lift fund.  The lift costs $4,000.   If you weren’t able to attend the dinner, please send your donations in care of the McCracken Swimming Pool.  It is required to have the lift prior to opening this season.
