Congratulations to Betty Greenway on her 80th birthday this Friday, July 12.

The Tale of the Rat. There was a varmint in Charlie's Station last week. It made short work of the paper in the trash. A plan was devised to catch the rodent. Mitch tried peanuts, but it took an expert to design a fool proof trap. Dave Derr to the rescue. He designed the trap using part of a candy bar - it worked like a charm. It is surmised that the rat came in on an old farm truck during harvest.

The first McCracken Rodeo Queen crown is on display at the Jail/Museum. The first few years the crown was used each year, but now each queen gets to keep her crown. The current crown is a rodeo theme crown.

Arkie McNair's heart surgery took ten hours, but we are happy to report he did well. Look forward to him getting home.
Kathy Osborne was in the hospital due to an infected shunt. We wish her a rapid recovery.

The Financial Sheet for the Jail/Museum will be available at the museum. As a non-profit corporation we are required to report to the public each year regarding the finances of McCracken Historical Museum, Inc. Come see our second shed.
Two fires were started by fireworks on the 4th of July. One was west of the cement street by the water well in a wheat field. The other was a cedar tree at the Gary Barnes' home.

In addition to the names of those from the rodeo booklets, we will honor those alumni we lost this past year. They are Adrian Doerr, Pete Rixon, Ivan Janke, Raven Schwindt Dale, Norma Ryan Bisagno, Lonnie Irvin, Gerald Rourke and Kenneth Grumbein. Pictures and an angel can be brought to the museum to honor these individuals this week. They will be returned to the family.

Interesting facts

Tommy guns were named after John T. Thompson, head of the Small Arms Division of the U. S. Army during World War 1. Thompson and Navy commander John Bish worked on prototypes during the ware and made many modifications after the war. It is a lightweight automatic machine gun with a drum-type magazine. They were also used by Allied troops during World War 11.

Who was the Bobby that Bobby Pins were named after?

Bobby pins were named after a haircut, the short bob hairstyle popularized during the Roaring Twenties by flappers.

Why is the cereal called Grape-Nuts when it contains neither grapes nor nuts?

C.W.Post introduced this cereal in 1898 and dubbed it Grape Nuts because of the natural sweetness of wheat and malted barley (sweet as grapes”, he said¬) and because it was crunchy as nuts. Some says it should be called “Grape Rocks”!

Do you have Swedish ancestors? There is to be a Swedish Genealogy Workshop at Lindsborg on September 28-29, 2013. The event will begin on Friday evening the 27th with a reception at the Sandzen Memorial Art Gallery. The Saturday workshops will be at the EvangelicalCovenant Church and the Sunday events at Vision-Tek all in Lindsborg. Carolyn has the brochure and registration information if you would like to attend.

Marge Elias, Jerilyn Stull and Colby met Maggie Elias at the airport in Hays. Maggie spent some time with her grandmother Marge and Mike, Jerilyn and Colby Stull. Marge, Jerilyn and Colby then took her to Wichita where she flew to Florida and will spend the summer with her dad, Doug Elias.

The McCracken Public library is proud to present during rodeo weekend David Zerfas. David Zerfas -"Zerf" is a singer/songwriter and Manhattan, Kansas native. His repertoire consists of Kansas cowboy and pioneer tunes, and original songs of Kansas frontier towns and characters. Zerf is equally at home performing fireside or on a stage. Zerf will be performing on Saturday, July 13th at 3 pm in the blue room of the McCracken Community Building. This event is sponsored by the McCracken Public Library, A free will donation,

Don't forget the golf tournaments. Friday, July 12 is for those 55 years young and older, T-off time 8:30, 9 hole two person scramble and it will be held at the McCracken Golf Club. Fee is $50 per team. Food not provided.

Saturday is the annual alumni sponsored golf tournament, in fact the 18th. T-off time is 8:00, 9 hole Texas Scramble held at the McCracken Golf Club, the fee is $25 per person. This is always a 'fun' tournament so come and enjoy!!!

Tom Rues, Concord, Connecticut is here visiting with his mother, Arline Rues. He and Cathy Rues Casey, Tony Rues, Kate and Will motored to Lewis Saturday where Tom attended his 35th class reunion. It was also Lewis Days this weekend and they all had a great time visiting with friends. Tomi and Emma Rues were at the basketball tourney in Dodge City.

A 3rd birthday party was held for Tessa Legleiter on Sateurday. Guests were her parents and brother, Lance & Rachel Legleiter and Hayden; Carl and Velma Legleiter, Mike and Sharolyn Legleiter, Michael and Brandi LaFond, Caleb and Rana, Roger, Brenda and Brian Legleiter, Bill Zeller, Julia Zeller, Ruth Axman, Lisa Gaber and John and Melanie Zeller.

Thomas Charles “Tom” Lovitt, 82, died June 25, 2013 at his home in Kirkland, Washington. He was the son of Charles 'Chuck' and Laura Jones Lovitt. He married Althea 'Polly' Owen in 1952. She died in 2010. He earned a Master's Degree in music from KU and was a trumpet player. He taught at the University of Washington. Survivors include a sister, Jane Lagasee, four children, six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Kansas State fair finale will feature Willie Nelson for the 2nd consecutive year.

Don Greenway of the Rush County Elevator commented that harvest will wind up in the next couple of days. It was much better than average. Wheat market is $3.25

Jennifer Gaschler and Bryon Scott were married Wednesday.

Darwin Herdman will remain for an extended visit after harvest stay with his grandparents Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Littler.

Ruth Moran Flynn died June 30 at the Atchison Hospital.

Bonnie Maxine Zeller, 63, died July 24 at St. Catherine Hospital, Garden City.

Mr. and Mrs. Fate Moses will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary in Wichita.

Mr. and Mrs. Avery Norlin will celebrate their 40th wedding anniversary.

Frances Graham and her son Jeff are visiting with her grandparents, Harlon and Mildred Anderson.

James Unrein and Diana Constantinides were married July 30 in Cyprus.

2nd Chance Thrift Store purchased helmets and boots for the McCracken Fire Department.
