Jolly Waring District No.48 was in the SE Corner of Section 32-16-21. The article about it was given by Tom Barnes and printed in the book The History of Readin' Ritin' n “Rithmetic in Ness County by Mary Lou Hall in 1980. Jolly Waring was formed January 28, 1886. The last schoolhouse was a good sized, almost square, white frame school with a bell tower, eight windows to the north side and an east entry with a cement step up to the door. As you entered, the boys' coat closet to the left and girls' coat closet to the right.

The schoolroom had a coal burning stove with a tin jacket to the southwest wall. The teacher's desk stood up front near the south wall with blackboards behind that. A large library with many books, a map case and a very large world globe was in the southwest corner of the room. There was an organ for music. Pupil's desks faced to the east. The interior was plastered and painted a light color, the ceiling was decorative tin painted ivory. Coal oil lamps with round reflectors were lights when needed.

Water was carried in by bucket from a farm house across the road but in the winter, the pupils brought water to drink. Each had his own cup.

There was a big playground but no equipment, so the kids played baseball, Flying Dutchman, Fox and Goose.
Spelling bees were held at the school, arithmetic and geography matches about every week. Different colored stars were given sometimes as awards. The pupils participated in Ness County spelling contests in Ness City. Certificates of awards were given to children neither absent nor tardy the whole term. (More next week)

Austin's trip to California. He was seen eating his way across California.

While in California with Holly, Keith, Stacy, Joy and Michele he:
--had Breakfast with Nancy and Billy
--Lunch at cousin Nancy and Billy Royals house (Joy, Keith and I were also there). We had salads, cake, and pie. Austin swam in Nancy's pool.
--Rubio's (fish tacos and tacquitos)
--The Pastie Shop (beef and chicken) pasties -- kind of like a beer-ox.
--Taqueria De Andy (beef and chicken tacos) ....the above was in one day.
..next day
--Marie Calendars (Alfredo with broccoli, salad and lemon pie)
--Starbucks Venti Carmel Frappuccino
--Portillos (Maxwell Street Dog with grilled onions)
--Joes Italian ice (this is a dessert made from crushed ice and fresh fruit flavoring).
--In and Out (chocolate shake, fries, double hamburger)
We went to the cemetery to see Joy Hunter’s grave; went to Joys so he could meet Michele's husband, Ray; went to the ocean and saw sea lions; watched a comedy DVD; he rented a movie. Austin had never met Billy or Ray. And he'd never been on a train and he took the Amtrak train from San Diego to San Juan Capistrano where Nancy picked him up. Michele got Austin, Amanda and her kids a discount to Disneyland.

To qualify for the additional cash prize, both members must have paid their 2014 dues by the start of the tournament. All ties for all prizes will be broken by a scorecard playoff. The amount of the additional cash prize will depend on the number of golfers playing.

2014 dues are $100 for a family and $50 for a single membership.

Lunch will be served after the tournament for a free will offering.
