Interesting facts

Around 1800 in America drunkards were called jerkers, because of their unstable gait. Beer fanciers were dubbed beer jerkers. By 1873 beer jerker was the title upon dispensers of subs. With the spread of soft drinks, fountain employees were honored with the appellation as well - soda jerks.

Verlene Wilson and Carolyn Thompson returned home Monday afternoon after a trip to Costa Rica. They stayed at the resort Allegro Papagayo. Attractions they enjoyed were a ride on the Bay of Papagayo where they enjoyed seeing Humpback Whales and sea turtles; they took the Palo Verde River Ride on the Tampisque River, the largest river in Costa Rica. It runs through the Palo Verde National Park. There they saw crocodiles, green Iguanas, White-Face Monkey and light blue Herons. Enroute to the Monte Verde Skywalk, they saw Howler Monkeys, a Toucan, white stripped squirrel and a sloth. Lunch was served by the owners of a Coffee Plantation which they toured. They also ate a vine ripe banana. On the 4,000 feet mountain peak they traversed the cloud forest on eight hanging bridges in a rain storm. The skywalks at the highest point was 120 feet from the floor of the forest.

Patricia Ruth Start VanDoren died July 29, 2013. She was born August 3, 1920 the only child to Professor James and Ruth Elmore Start in Hays. She married J.P. VanDoren Jr. May 16, 1942 in Wakeeney, J.P. died in 1970. She is survived by her two children, David & Cathy VanDoren, Steve and Marilyn Sim.

Father Earl Befort, Pastor of Schoenchen, Antonio, and St. Joseph's Church in Hays will join eight other Capuchins at the St. Fidelis Friary in Victoria for retirement. Several of our locals enjoyed Fr. Befort very much.

Jeff & Julia McCormick were supper guests of Jerry & Jodi Higgins Wednesday evening. Shirley Higgins joined them.

If you are planning on going to the State Fair in Hutchinson and have some extra time, please check out Smith's Market at 211 South Main, they have an amazing store. Also in the area is the Bluebird Book Store, located at 2 South Main in Hutchinson. It is the neatest book store ever, those of you who are readers will love it.

Les & Rose Diehl were home in McCracken over the weekend. Rose and Debi Schuckman motored to Dodge City on Monday for Fall Fest 'business'.

Neal and Amy Jacobs, Jaden, Jenna and Hadley Jacobs, Wichita spent the weekend with Pris Jacobs and Tessa. Neal and Amy visited with her parents, Virgil and Lou Windholz in Ness City. Saturday evening Neal and Jaden played slo-pitch softball with KBK in the tournament in LaCrosse. They didn't win first.

Hadley Jacobs, daughter of Jaden and Jenna Jacobs, starting walking this weekend. She closes her eyes and just takes off.

Lydia Mills died Sunday at LaCrosse.

Mr. and Mrs. Don Buster left Thursday for a three weeks' tour of Europe.

Melissa Morgan won 3rd in the toddlers show at the Rush County fair.

A son, Daniel Grant, was born August 1 to Mr. and Mrs. Del Bethke at Shawnee

A son was born, Shiloh James, to Mr and Mrs. JerryTomlinson at Ft. Riley.

Charles A. Herdman, 78, died August 10 at the Hadley Hospital.

The Brownell American Legion under Coach Bill Lovitt won a double header from Rush County 5-0 and 16-2. Rob Giess won the opener with Nolan Cromwell giving the relief effort. Team members are Greg Hinman, Norbert Flax, John Walker, Jerry Higgins, Allen Zordel, Jim Kenworthy, Nolan Cromwell, Tim Pfannenstiel, Dan Conner, Lonnie Irvin, Rob Giess, Gene Flax,Terry Weeks. Assistant coach Doug Higgins, and Brad Lovitt, bat boy.

Mr. and Mrs. Vernon Wittman moved to McCracken from Alexander.

A surprise birthday party was held for Mrs. Mayme McCormick on her 85th birthday.

Robert Halbleib, 58, died August 1 at McCracken.

Mr. and Mrs. Orvin Jones will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary in September.

Mrs. Willa Start moved into her mother's home (Maude Peer) last week.

Mike Conner was burned in a tractor accident and was a patient in Ness City Hospital for a week.

Mr. and Mrs. Sam Higgins and family moved to McCracken from Plainville last week.

Mrs. Pearl Moses moved to Bison last week.

Kent Bible is a senior at Kansas State.

Mrs. Juanita Moses was a weekend guest of her sister, Mrs. Etta Irvin.

Sherri Hart, Ellsworth, spent the weekend with her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Walker.
