Wetzel, Lloyd W. “Red Fox” Wagner; Norma Wagner Lawrence, and Glen L. Lawrence for our files. Traci Zinn, Phoenix, Arizona, was here on Friday. She visited the Jail/Museum with Lance McCormick and Shirley Higgins.

Rosalie Renz, Addie Mills, Tammy Wagner, Darlene Misegadis and Jolene Niernberger were the many friends and relatives who gathered at the Otis Elementary School last Saturday to celebrate the 90th birthday of Hankie Bartonek.

The Miller-Mills Family Reunion was held at the Golden Corral in Topeka on Saturday afternoon. Those in attendance included Mildred Mills, Addie Mills, Fred and Linda Mills Shirk, Wes and Peggy Mills Bacon, David and Brenda Mills, Larry and Cindy MillerTompkin. Next year they will meet at Hays.

Aaron and Lesley McGaughey, Lillian and Jack, have returned from an eight day trip to Yellowstone.  They celebrated Aaron’s birthday while there.

Last weekend Lance and Rachel Legleiter, Haydn, Lexie and Tessa were in McCracken at grandparents, John and Melanie Zeller. They all celebrated Tessa’s 5th birthday.

Apologies to Tony Harp for leaving out his name in the 1965 MHS alumni reunion! He REALLY DID graduate. This just shows he does read the RCNews!!!

Congratulations to Keil and Sarah Emerson on the birth of a daughter, Amelia Violet, born August 19, 2015. She was 8lbs – 7 oz and 22 inches long. Grandparents are John and Melanie Zeller, Raymond and Karen Emerson, Great Bend.

Ron and Cathy Casey, Topeka, spent the weekend in McCracken. Saturday Cathy took her mother, Arline Rues to Ness City for a short road trip.

John and Melanie met Kevin and Valerie Anderson in Salina on Saturday. They ate at Steerrman Bar and Grill and attended the Jim Gassigan show at the Steeple Threatre in Salina.

John and Melanie Zeller spent the week end in Augusta with Delvin and Donna Jay. Donna celebrated the 25th anniversary of her 29th birthday. A fun time!!

On Saturday Roy and Phyllis Conrad attended the funeral of Dwayne Curtis Rein, 50 of Lakin, KS. Curtis was the son of Clifford and Lilyann (Suppes) Rein of Garden City, KS. The funeral was held at St. Anthony Catholic, Lakin. Concelebrates were Father Rene Labrador and Father Mike Helms. A lunch was served and sitting across the table from Roy and Phyllis was Mr and Mrs Leland Rein from Bazine. Another couple setting next to us asked where we were from and we told them and the lady spoke up and said that her Dad use to teach school in McCracken and come to find out she was the daughter of Clarence Richardson. Didn't catch the her last name. Her husband said that he use to play ball with the Higgin's, Lonnie Irvin and Maynard Schuckman. Small world isn't it. Father Rene said to tell everybody "Hello" in McCracken.

John and Tammy spent from Tuesday – Monday in Springfield with Dominic and Kayla Weskamp. On their return home they attended the Kansas City Royals game Monday night.

History Notes

January 1910: The Hampton and Fairview boys had a rabbit hunt Wednesday afternoon, they were known as the north and south sides. Fifteen young men composed the two parties. The results were 168 rabbits.

The town was hard hit by another disastrous fire. Nine business houses were in ashes in an hours’ time.

May 1911: Henry Higgins and Mary Wasinger were married Tuesday morning at St. Mary’s Church southwest of town. Rev. Father Chawke performed the ceremony.

A wreck of a stock train near Bison Sunday killed nearly 1,500 sheep. Fourteen cars went into the ditch.

March 1912: The snow storm which came over the Colorado line Saturday morning reached this place and raged with unlimited fury all day Sunday. As a result of high winds every draw in the county is full to overflowing and all roads impassable.

1913: Graduation ceremonies will be held at the City opera house. Graduates are Ralph Elmore, Sadie Wilson, Nina Ward, Eleanor Snodgrass, Mamie Darkes and Mabel Twiselton.

Isaac Metz and Resto Darkes will leave here with their threshing machines for Hardesty, Canada. The crew consists of Will, Pete, Fred & Ike Metz, Albert Dugan, Wm. Showalter, James Rixon, Will Foster, Roy Seiling and Albert Start.

June 1914: Common school graduates were Ruby Yawger, Ethel Carmen, Thomas Plotner, Merlin Saunders, and Ralph Dougherty.

There are 30 to 40 threshing machines at work in the west end of Rush County. Perry Yawger’s new farm house is almost ready. It has six rooms with all the modern appurtenances. (This is the house where I grew up, east of town). 1917 Perry put up a big new barn east of town. Sh

February 1915: Those who left for Lamar, Colorado for locating homesteads were: W.M Foster, A. Ree, George Ree, George Foster, Anna Ree, May and Josie Foster, Mr. and Mrs. Jobe Swisher, Earnest Seiling and Frank Start.

The Farmers Telephone Company began building telephone lines connecting LaCrosse and McCracken.

February 1916: Train fare to Kansas City $8.68. Wheat sold on this market yesterday at $2.50.

Ralph HInman recently purchased the Lindbloom place. Brought in 106 bushels of wheat in one load and received a check for $137.80. He gave a dance in his new barn Saturday evening.

March 1917: Preparatory work on the new EUB church will begin immediately.

Seventh and eighth grade students are: Nina Hunt, Harry Juvenal, Leslie Hunt, Ruby Stephens, Katharen Akers, Paul Brenner, Verda Brackney, Rosa McKittrick, Clara Marak, Marie Juvenal, Neva Harris, Nancy Farwell, Ida Mae Kueffer, Thelma Synder, Bessie Earlenbaugh, Campy Conner, Pat McKittrick and Harold Murray.

January 1918: Frank Kelly, an employee of Perry Yawger, shot and killed him at his home 3 miles east of McCracken.

It commenced snowing Wednesday night, two inches fell and it was 26 below zero.

February 1919: Workmen have started to lay brick on the new Norlin building.

Old timers say the snow drift near the bridge north of town was the largest they had ever seen. Only the cross bars on the telephone poles were visible above the drift.
