For the next few weeks we will share Reminiscences about Hampton and Hampton School from the book “Hampton and the Big Timber Valley on the Fort Hays - Fort Dodge Trail”. Norman Baldwin: ( Norman did an oil painting of the Hampton school building. It was donated to the McCracken Public Library). He graduated from District 17 in 1942. Arlene Temple (6th grade), Velma Rogers (4th grade) and Walter Rogers (2nd grade) were the other students. Mildred Bailey Seuser was the teacher. Ross Baldwin, Basil Temple and Pete Rogers were the board members. They held their meetings in their home. The salary for the teacher was between $70.00 and $90.00 per month for eight months. His favorite members are the last day of school dinners, Christmas plays and program, digging caves in the banks of Big Timber Creek, skating on the creek, smoking driftwood during the noon hour, Halloween costume parties, box suppers, playing 'fox and geese' in the snow. When his uncle Bob Baldwin came to pick up the teacher, he turned a jack rabbit loose in the classroom and then let his dog, Beans, chase it. What a commotion!

Katelyn Engel made the 7th grade volleyball team at Hays Middle School. Congratulations, not only can this little gal sing but she can also play volleyball.

I read this in ‘Woman’s Day’...”From your parents you learn love and laughter and how to put one foot in front of the other. But when books are opened, you discover you have wings.” Helen Hayes

Chuck and Zach Higgins motored to Kansas City Saturday where they helped Jeff Jennings celebrate his 10th anniversary of being ‘cancer free’. A GREAT reason for celebration.

Visited with Delores Petz Saturday evening, I noticed driving by they had rain, she said an inch but they also lost their power, poles were blown down. Their power was restored Sunday. We need rain badly but without the wind.
John and Melanie Zeller had lunch with Julia Zeller and Bill Zeller in Hays Sunday at Al’s Chickenette. After their delicious meal, they motored on to Salina to shop. While there they stopped in at the Blue sky Brewery for refreshments. Later they met Richard and Nancy Baker at Martinelli’s for nice supper and a good visit. Later that evening they took in a concert at the Stiefel Theater featuring the group Styx.
