From the Jail/Museum book collection: The Complete and Authentic Life of Ben Thompson Man with a Gun by Floyd Benjamin Streeter. The author was Head Librarian at Kansas State College from 1925 until his retirement in 1953. He devoted much of his spare time and vacation to research of Old Courthouse records and newspaper files to bring first-hand, authentic information about early Cow-Towns. In doing so he came across many references to the doings of the Thompson Boys of Texas, key figures in the lore of Ellsworth. In Ben Thompson's forty-three years his exploits as a gun fighter are legendary. He had twenty notches on his gun at the age of twenty. In Ellsworth a lynch mob gathered in anger to lynch Ben's brother Billy. Ben helped Billy escape, holding the mob at bay, unaided and alone until Billy had gotten safely out of town. The book was donated to the Jail/Museum by Les and Rose Diehl. Other books written by Mr. Streeter were Prairie Trails and Cow-Towns and The Kaw, one of the Series of American River Books. He just finished this book before his death on January 1, 1956

Our first Labor Day: In 1882, a New York City union decided to hold a parade and picnic for workers on September 5. The parade would be a chance for workers to show off their work. More than 10,000 marchers showed up that day with thousands more watching the parade. Many people carried signs that told what the workers wanted to change. By the 1930's every state in the US celebrated Labor Day.
