This is a follow-up from rodeo time: We enjoyed the music and singing of Zerf and the visit with his companions, Jim Grey of Ellsworth and Californy Joe. Jim writes a newspaper called “The Kansas Cowboy”. He keeps a “Cowboy Diary” which is published in the paper. These are his comments from July 13 when they visited. “McCracken was holding its big rodeo weekend and Zerf was invited to play some of his good stuff for the home crowd. Californy and the Cowboy tagged along for the experience. I was looking forward to meeting up with #170 (my membership number to the paper), Carolyn Thompson and talk some history. I found her along with Shirley Higgins at the McCracken Historical Museum, imagine that! We stayed during the day with some of the local McCracken expatriate alumni who have chosen to maintain second homes in their beloved home town. Rose Diehl was our hostess. Who should be waiting to welcome us but Tim Rues, Director of the LeCompton Constitution Hall. I knew he was a McCracken boy, just didn't know he was Rose Diehl's brother. We all had a GRAND time in McCracken. The town is filled to the brim with folks who care about the community. Made ya feel like you were a part of things too! But alas, we all had to get back to our own lives. We bid farewell to our hosts and to Californy Joe. He was heading northwest and we returned east. But folks were so hospitable we knew we would not soon forget our day in McCracken, Kansas”. The main article in the September/October 2013 issue is about Print Olive - Cowman. Print brought cattle up the trail from Texas.
