Constitution Week - September 17-23, 2015. This is the 228th anniversary of the Constitution. On September 17, 1787 the delegates to the Constitutional Convention met for the last time to sign the document they had created. Be an informed citizen.

Our sympathy to the family of The Rev. Raymond Eston Noah, 96, who died August 24, 2015. He received his Masters of Divinity from Asbury Theological Seminary. He and his wife, Cleo, of 73 years, served as pastors of the Dodge City District of the Methodist Church. Rev. Noah served McCracken and Alexander United Methodist Churches in 1982 They also were missionaries of the Methodist church in Angola and Zimbabwe, Africa and Cascavel and Umuarama, Brazil. Burial will be in Mount Hope Cemetery in Ellis at a later date.

Cheryl Burns, LaCrosse, is a new employee of the Hays Daily News in advertising services and as a graphic designer.

Addie Mills was a Saturday overnight guest of Jay Klee at Council Grove City Lake. They enjoyed supper at the Saddlerock Café in Council Grove. Enroute home Addie visited with Chris Zimmerman.

September 16 Lynnette Doornbos is substituting in the kindergarten class for Bailey Morgan...wine would be welcome.

Wade Oller, a senior at OSU and grandson of Albert & Doris Oller made a hole in one this week. Congratulations to Anton Foust who was freshman royalty attendant at the Otis-Bison homecoming. We have received word that Michael Quigg, Mercedes, Texas, died September 9.

Arlyn and Jan North recently spent time in Snowy Mountain Pass in Wyoming with friends Bob and Sabrina Symms. Soaked in the mountain air, rode trails on four-wheelers, fished and grilled fresh trout, and spent every evening by the bon fire. No cell service available! Loved it!

Frank and Elaine Littler and Arlyn and Jan North spent Wednesday with Dwight and Sherri Eisenhour. Enjoyed lunch with their niece Melissa McDowell, great-niece Cassie Marshall, and great, great-niece Adalyn Marshall. Dwight was an excellent tour guide at the Dairy south of Cimmaron. The 6 of them enjoyed the Don Williams Concert in Dodge City that evening. James Hansen sat just 2 rows behind us. Had a great visit.

Jan North attended a Beth Moore Conference in Wichita over the week-end. Awesome!!!

History

1956: Mr. and Mrs. Donald Davis have purchased the Auston home. Donald was recently transferred back to McCracken from Larned. Richard Shiney, Donald Buster and Donald West were admitted to the practice of law at Topeka. Wayne Irvin has enrolled in Emporia State. Mervin Elmore is the new manager of K-T Oil Station. Mr. and Mrs. Donald Buster and Greg have moved to McCracken. Donald will work in the Citizens State Bank. Clarence Richardson is the new grade school superintendent. Richard Gordon will leave for Army duty in the Far East. McCracken grade school will graduate twelve.

1957: Norman Baldwin has been elevated to Principal at Otis. The Senior class accompanied by their teacher, Kelly Hart left on the excursion train for Kansas City where they attended the New York Yankees – KC Athletics ball game. Nick Higgins has purchased the Humburg elevator. A small twister struck the home of Max Washaliski. Dight House is stationed at Pirmasens, Germany. Mr. and Mrs. Bert Ohlemeier and family recently left for Glens Ferry, Idaho, where they will make their home. MHS football team defeated Schoenchen 26-7. Bob Higgins and Perry Irvin led the ground attack. Good blocking from Norm Pfannenstiel, Larry Eisenhour and James Hanson while Bob Peters varied the attack with his passing.

1958: Underdog MHS basketball team upset Otis 80-72. Peters, Irvin, Showalter and Walker each scored in double digits. Rodney Milling Company elevator was destroyed by fire. The band mothers have plates for sale with the picture of the old McCracken High School. Mr. and Mrs. John Walker are leaving for Hartman, Colorado.

1959: Arlene Wilson and Joyce Showalter are members of the Ft. Hays concert band. Rush County land has been selling at premium prices from $84.00 to more than $212.00 an acre. Claude Elias has contributed data to Washburn University for their research on foxes in Kansas. A tornado hit four miles west of town causing considerable damage to the farm homes of Lyle Dugan, Thomas Barnes and Ralph Thompson. Five seniors will graduate from MHS this year: Judy Whitis, Janice Myers, Gerald Barnes, Allen Showalter and Melissa House. Grade School beginners are: Kirby Petz, Johnny Mac Showalter, Anita Zeller, Peter Derr, Kenneth Foster, Victor Parsons, Joy North, Jennifer Gaschler, Steven McFarren, Kimberly Elmore, Jacquiline Gaschler, Joan Peck, Cheryl Casey, Louise Rourke, Sharon McRill and Lee Allen Showalter. Lola Oller is teaching the fourth grade in an Army school on the island of Okinawa. Large rains were reported southwest of town, Patrick Casey 4.20 and the Washaliski farm 5 inches. The four churches of the community will present a community cantata at the high school. Fire destroyed St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Liebenthal.
