Our sympathy to the family of Lucille M. Pfaff Young, 80, who died September 22, 2016 at the Ness County Hospital. She was born November 2, 1935 west of McCracken to John and Silvinia Hammerschmidt Pfaff. She married Eugene J. Young on July 23, 1957. He preceded her in death. She is survived by four brothers, Walter, Leon, Roy, Bennie and four sisters, Betty Miller, Eileen Backstrom, Laura Morgan and Rebecca Kinyon; stepson, Jim Young and stepdaughter, Terry Hertel. She was buried in LaCrosse. She was the genealogist of the family and provided pictures and articles to the Jail/Museum.

I have a correction from a News item about Chuck and Jerry officiating volleyball games in Haven. Those attending were Jill, Brian, Paige, Florence, Kevin, Pat, Kendell, Don and Mary Catherine.

Bunco will be played October 4 at the Community Building. There were 11 at the first meeting. Ron and Cathie Casey were in McCracken this weekend staying at their home.

The LaCrosse high school girls’ volleyball team placed 1st at the Kiowa County volleyball tournament in Greensburg, Saturday. They defeated Ellis, South Gray, Bucklin, Ness City and Kiowa for 1st. Congratulations.

We were saddened by the death of Dean Gilbert this past Sunday the 11th; we all grew up together. We spent lots of time in Vic & Tillie’s learning to play pinochle, and didn’t cheat either. Another winter ‘activity’ was sledding at Brick Hill. Old pieces of tin and hoods from cars were the ‘usual’ sleds. I think there were only two broken ankles....

A fun time in the summer was going to Cedar Bluff. We would stop behind ‘Mutt” and Maddies for some beer, to the Gilbert grandparents for a galvanized tub then on to Brownell for Ice. We always were on the south side of the dam. There weren’t many boats, maybe two or three, not many restrictions but it was a wonder someone didn’t drown, not many knew how to swim.

Yipee!!!  McCracken was named Rodeo of the Year.  Thanks to those who do what they do to make this happen.
