We received copies of the American Road magazine's fall issue this past week. The article on Paper Moon and the Interview with Tatum O'Neal is very well done. Becky Repp came to McCracken and traveled the route of the movie. She documented places with pictures that are of first class quality. Thomas Arthur Repp wrote the articles and interviewed Tatum. The cover in black and white is a picture of Tatum in front of the Anderson Motors building and showing the west side of Main Street with a full complement of buildings. What a difference 42 years makes. We are grateful to the American Road Magazine for their expertise in presenting this story. The filming of Paper Moon was a highlight in the life of McCracken. We hope to obtain more copies of the magazine for sale. The magazine is published quarterly. You can order a subscription on line. We would like to mention if you have seen the magazine that we need to correct that in McCracken the only stand-in for Tatum was Lanette Stremel. She even provided a picture of Tatum with her at the McCracken Hotel, but it was not used. The other girl with Tatum was a spectator on the first day of filming at the Nickel Cemetery. The picture on the last page of the interview with Tatum is of the Sunflower sculpture done by the late Pat Istas of Lecompton and the McCracken water tower. It is spectacular.

Amy F. Howe Burdick Joseph was the mother of Anna Joseph. Anna's father was Sylvester Burdick who was wounded in the battle of Spotsylvania Courthouse. He died in Andersonville prison. Kenneth Brackney's story:

Captain John W. Edwards was farming at the commencement of the Civil War and like thousands of other East Tennesseans tried to enlist in the Union Army, but was prevented from doing so by the Rebel Armies. He enlisted in the Union Army the second day of April, 1862, in the 8th Tenn. Cavalry at Lexington, Kentucky and became second duty Sergeant of Co 1. After arduous service with that regiment he was promoted to Second Lieutenant and served on the staff of General Baird who commanded the Second Division 14th Corps and was with him during the great Battle of Chickamauga, September 19 and 20th, 1863.

Kim Townsend is working as the library tech at Abilene High School. Sandi Dutt, who began her teaching career in Otis-Bison with Arlene and Babe Gilbert, is the counselor there. Tim Klein, a 1998 graduate of Pawnee Heights, remembers playing in McCracken back in the day. He had many kind things to say about Coach Conner and Coach McKinney.

Kim Townsend was in Lowe's in Abilene a couple of weeks ago and was wearing a McCracken shirt. A gentleman stopped her and asked if they still play basketball in McCracken. He grew up in Hanston and remembered playing McCracken. Actually, he said Hanston didn’t play much; they just watched McCracken beat them. Then, he asked about a left handed shooter that played in the early 70's. He thought the last name was Irvin. He was talking about Lonnie and what an incredible shot he was. He talked about him for a good 10 minutes before his wife pulled him out the door. I thought it was so nice.

A World Series ‘tidbit’. New York Yankee player, Yogi Bera 89, who was the catcher for the team, holds the record for the most World Series appearances, with 14; with wins, 10—as well as a career record for the most World Series hits, 71.
