Gloria Ann McCormick 70, Hays, died November 15, 2015 at her home. She married Kenny L. McCormick on November 28, 1964 in Great Bend. She is survived by her husband, a son Craig, three daughters Candy Jones, Michele Kirk and Dawn McCormick. Burial was in St. Joseph Cemetery, Hays.

Jail/Museum records, Hampton Township: In 1879, Geo. W. Cramer received thirty-three dollars for goods which were allowed by Hampton Township for township goods.. S. S. (Salem) Burgner received nineteen dollars and fifty cents for road work; Joseph Hampton for timber for bridge - five dollars. In 1881, L. L. Darkes for service, two dollars; D. Trostel for service, two dollars; P. C. Freshouer, for service, two dollars; Mr. Leach for house to hold elections in one dollar; William F. Grumbein, two dollars for service; James Nickel, two dollars for service. In 1882, T. R. Brooke, for fuel seven dollars; Charles Benbow, for service, two dollars; Thomas Nickel, for service four dollars. In 1883 money in the treasurer for the township was $25.70 and in the road funds $119.25. These men were all early settlers in eastern Hampton Township. More about them can be found in the Hampton and the Big Timber Valley on the Fort Hays-Fort Dodge Trail. This was pre-McCracken.

Roy and Phyllis Conrad received a call on Sunday from Rich and Linda Conrad, St. Louis, saying they have a new grandson born to Savanna and Michael Conrad, a boy. His name is Soren Michael. He was born at Missouri Baptist Hospital. This makes two grandsons and one granddaughter for Rich and Linda.

Ida Mae Gilbert, Utica, mother of Cecelia Gilbert, is doing rehab at Grisell Memorial Hospital in Ransom after breaking the femur in her leg. She expects to be there two more weeks. She would enjoy your visits or cards.

Dave DeArmond, Merriam, Kansas, visited the Jail/Museum on Monday afternoon to see our Paper Moon display. He is trying to locate all places where the scenes were filmed.

David and Brenda Mills, Elsmore, Kansas, were Sunday morning visitors of Addie, Marty and Tina Mills.

Zach Higgins, Danton Riedl, Brady Demel, Kayci Boxboxberger, Alisha Patton, Joey Cotton, Kara Boxberger, Nick and Annie Lomas, Lavern and Roxie Boxberger, Amber Crawford enjoyed bowling in a tournament in Salina this weekend.

1972 history notes

The MHS Mustangs won their first league championship since 1938. The ’71 season was the best since 1950 with 6 wins. Two players made the All-State team, Greg Buster and Craig Wendler. Richard Showalter arrived home for a 20 day leave from the Azores where he is stationed with the Navy. MHS enrollment of 51 students is the smallest school entry led Shawnee Mission North, enrollment of 2,000 most of the game before falling 53-51 in the first round action in the Dodge City Tournament of Champions. They edged Dodge City 59-58 in the losers’ bracket game and defeated Chapman 54-38 for 4th place. MHS girls basketball team members are: Lorrie Morgan, Rosemary Rues, Nancy Higgins, Cathie Ryan, Sally Buster, Betty Moran, Linda Sloan, Pam Showalter, Debra Baus, Laura Hinman. Barbara Reinart, coach. Dixie Walker Williams received her degree in music from Ft. Hays State. Doug Whitis was recently promoted to Army Sergeant while serving with the 17th Air Cavalry near Pieku, Viet man. The 8th grade boys’ basketball team defeated Bison 52-22 in a game at Bison. Players are Scott Kershner, Jim Casey, Chuck Higgins, Tim Rues, Steve Foreman, Bruce Davis, Ricky Boese, Robin Schuckman and Mark McCormick. 7th graders are Danny Halbleib, Larry Buster, Mike Conner, Leslie Rogers, Jimmy Dome, Layne Morgan, Don Phillips, Mark Baus and Tim Rues. Karen Clark has been promoted to chief operator of Southwestern Bell in LaCrosse. Charles Zinn has been doing the sports news for McCracken for McCracken and the Rush County News. MHS took the championship in the 1-A District Tournament at Ransom. Dennis Elias has arrived home from Vietnam where he served the past 5 months. MHS Mustangs defeated Little River 57-49 to capture the State Crown!! Myron Schuckman announced his intentions to enroll at the University of Notre Dame. Lida Floyd received her 50 year pin from Order of Eastern Star. McCracken Girl Scout troop #47 traveled to Topeka to complete “”My Government Badge” They toured the Capitol, introduced to the Senate, and toured the museum. Those attending were Roberta Halbleib, Marsha and Paulette Healy, Nancy Higgins, Terri Rogers, Lynette Legleiter, Rosemary Rues, Diana McFarren and Sally Buster. They were accompanied by their leader, Joan Buster and Greg Buster. Gail Keady will be honored by WSU for academic achievement. Twenty five little league and Cookie League baseball players attended the Ft. Hays – Yankton, SD baseball game Friday night at Larks Park. Glenn Conner was honored along with other area coaches between games. Between 50-60 boys are out annually for baseball. Mr. and Mrs. Bill Moran and family left for a 10 day visit in Elgin, Florida. MHS scored 13 points in the LaCrosse High School track meet. Keith Higgins was a double winner in shot-put and discus. Members are Dave Derr, Randy Taylor, John Elmore, Rick Schwindt, Keith Higgins, Steve Swartz, Dave Rogers, Don Casey, Fritz Foster, Kent Brown, Craig Wendler, Daryl Casey, Rich Conrad, Allen Kober, Mike Moran, Roger Legleiter and Bill Greenway. Coach, Bill McKinney. “Digger”Phelps, head basketball coach at Notre Dame was the featured speaker at the McCracken Athletic Banquet. Average family income in Rush County is $6,531.00 compared to $8,693 for the State. Fay Jennings recently sold his farm to George Myers.
